Anil Vachani, MD, MS, is an Innovation Faculty member at the Penn Center for Cancer Care Innovation (PC3I). Dr. Vachani is a pulmonary physician and clinical investigator at Penn Medicine and the Philadelphia VA Medical Center. He co-Directs the Lung Cancer Screening (LCS) programs at both institutions and leads efforts to implement lung cancer screening services including the initiation of a screening clinic to conduct shared decision-making visits and the provision of tobacco dependence treatment.
His research interests broadly focus on the studies that address important process and outcome questions relevant to the study of quality and comparative effectiveness of current approaches for prevention, screening, diagnosis, and management of lung cancer and other thoracic malignancies. Dr. Vachani’s current work includes a multicenter cohort study and interventional trials to assess key outcomes relevant to LCS implementation and studies to identify the optimal approaches for the delivery of screening and cancer care via telehealth.
His recent work includes a focus on approaches to achieve diagnostic excellence within lung cancer care. Despite its essential place in clinical medicine, diagnostic performance is understudied and unmeasured. Current approaches will assess the implementation of new risk assessment tools to improve the diagnostic assessment of individuals with suspected lung cancer.
