Heather Sheaffer, DSW, LCSW, FACHE

Director, Patient and Family Services, Abramson Cancer Center

Dr. Sheaffer is the Director of Patient and Family Services for the Abramson Cancer Center at Penn Medicine. In this role, she led the development of oncology nurse navigation and oncology social work in the ambulatory setting as well as founded the Abramson Cancer Center Patient and Family Advisory Council. She earned a doctoral degree in Clinical Social Work from the University of Pennsylvania during her tenure as Social Work leader at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. Her research interests and related publications and presentation topics include: the experience of families of patients in the ICU, academic nurse navigation, oncology social work practice, support group development, leadership in healthcare, and integrative oncology. She has received numerous awards and recognition over her career, but considers receiving the 2022 Penn Medicine Advocacy Award recognizing her co-creation and leaderships of CHAT (Casual Honest Anti-Racism Talks) as the most personally significant honor. She was also recently named a Fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives.
