Dr. Carmen Guerra is an Associate Professor and Vice Chair of Diversity and Inclusion in the Department of Medicine, and Associate Director of Diversity and Outreach at the Abramson Cancer Center at the Perelman School of Medicine. Dr. Guerra also serves as the Advisory Dean of Students in the Helen O. Dickens House at the Perelman School of Medicine. Her research interests focus on cancer screening and prevention and on better understanding and reducing cancer disparities across the entire spectrum of cancer – from screening to survivorship. Dr. Guerra is the founding co-director of the UPHS colorectal cancer screening navigation program and the Penn Breast Health Initiative/Healthy Woman Program, which help improve access to cancer screening tests for vulnerable populations.

 

Dr. Guerra has received multiple NIH and RWJ grants to better understand the barriers to and develop and evaluate cancer screening navigation programs designed to overcome barriers to cancer screening in vulnerable populations. Dr. Guerra is the Board Scientific Officer for the American Cancer Society’s National Board of Directors, chairs the ACS Mission Outcomes Committee, is a member of the ACS Guidelines Development Committee, and a member of the ACS National Advisory Council on Health Equity. For her work to help underserved patients, she received the prestigious St. George National Award from the ACS in 2017 and the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania Patient Advocate Award in 2018.

 

Dr. Guerra completed the Executive Leadership in Academic Medicine (ELAM) program in 2019. With support from the Office of the Provost and in collaboration with the Wharton School, Dr. Guerra led the development of a leadership training program for the women and diverse faculty at PSOM in 2015 which, to date, has trained over 100 faculty.
