Penn Medicine Receives $3.5 Million Grant to Advance Cervical Cancer Care in Botswana

A $3.5 million grant from the National Cancer Institute (NCI) will help clinicians provide better care to women with cervical cancer in the nation of Botswana, where cervical cancer mortality rates are 10 times higher than in the U.S.

The project will identify and test communication strategies, such as text messages or phone-based patient navigation, that can close gaps in the care continuum. Katharine Rendle, PhD, MSW, MPH, Deputy Director and Innovation Faculty with the Penn Center for Cancer Care Innovation (PC3I), is leading the project along with Surbhi Grover, MD, an associate professor of radiation oncology and the director of global radiation oncology at the Hospital of University of Pennsylvania.
